The Bells Of Spring
When I think back, I have always loved the sheer sight of those first bright yellow swaths of traditional daffodils standing out brightly like golden bells to ring in the new season. These little sunshine colored beauties arrive in the very early days of Spring when most of the rest of the landscape is still barren and brown . Amazingly , I have never had the desire to have these bright yellow rays of sunshine in a bouquet indoors , and I think that I might not be alone in that thought. Although joyful, bright yellow is just not my pallet when it comes to flowers indoors. I don’t mind yellow as one of the jolly crew in a colorful mix, but maybe not as the main event and certainly not all yellow. When I discovered all of the colors and shapes of the hybrid varieties that were out there however , many of them not new hybrids at all but heirloom varieties dating back many decades or even centuries like the famous double beauty “Butter and Eggs” c. 1777, or delightful “Early Cheer” c. 1934, I fell in love. Sadly, many of the heirloom varieties are lost to our past, but there are absolutely hundreds of gorgeous varieties available today that have a wide range of color and shape. Not just your ordinary bright yellow bells.
My favorite narcissus tend to be the white, truly fluffy, double varieties with coral and multi color centers, although I am also drawn to a brilliant fluffy all white double as well. I am always on the hunt for varieties I haven’t tried yet and trial varieties for strong tall stems , and naturalizing abilities each season . Like many other species, narcissus have early , mid , and late blooming varieties. By having all 3 of these types, you can have blooms that will last for weeks in early Spring! One of the best things about this Spring beauty is that the deer will not eat them!
We pair our heirloom narcissus with early tulips, hellebores, flowering branches, etc. to create stunning early Spring bouquets for the “Daffodil Days” bouquet club membership.
Next up in our early Spring blooms come the mid/late blooming tulips. We focus most of our efforts on the double flowering varieties that are not often available in stores. Ranunculus , alliums, avens, Astrantia, Canterbury Bells , and depending on the season, peonies, usually decide to join in during this time of early Spring . Many of these varieties are completely gone by the time the market opens in late May.
Our Early Spring Bouquet Club memberships are now officially open and filling up quickly! There are just 4 slots left in the “Early Spring Bouquet Club”, and a handful left of the “Daffodil Days” bouquet club. What does membership include? Each club has 3 weeks ( if you join both clubs it is a total of 6 weeks) of harvest to table deliveries to your door of the season’s freshest blooms! In addition each membership includes a bonus Holiday Amaryllis bulb garden kit also delivered directly to you. We source the largest available bulbs on the market for maximum blooms for your Amaryllis bulb garden.
